Your accommodation options
When you have established where in the UK you wish to live you will find a range of longer-term accommodation options available to you. Like anywhere in the world different locations, boroughs/suburbs or neighbourhoods have a different vibe associated with them - which is always reflected in the price!
In many cities, especially London, fashion and trend have a huge influence on the property market, and so you can expect to pay twice as much for a one bedroom flat in trendy Angel than its bohemian neighbour, of Stoke Newington. The local transport system and proximity to shops and restaurants also affect the prices…
There is no need to bring the kitchen sink…
A wide selection of UK flats and homes are rented with basic furnishings. In an average furnished flat you should expect there to be a cooker, fridge, washing machine, basic furniture i.e. bed, sofas, a table and chairs, as well as kitchen equipment such as pans and crockery etc. However, this often differs from landlord to landlord so it is particularly important that you ask exactly what is provided in the furnished property.
Most property owners will do an inventory of what is in the flat when you move in and when you leave, so it is important to check all the furnishings thoroughly before you agree to sign the inventory. If something is broken or not working which is included in your tenancy agreement it is important that you ask to have it repaired or replaced.

Flat shares are probably the most popular type of longer-term accommodation if you are coming to work and travel from abroad. When a room(s) become available in a flat the landlord will often privately advertise in the local paper, classifieds or newsagent window rather than going through an Estate Agent. Flat sharing is a good option if you are travelling on your own. Sharing the facilities such as the kitchen, lounge and bathroom usually means that you will also be sharing the utility bills.
Flats and apartments usually have one, two or three bedrooms with a communal bathroom and kitchen. Rented as a whole unit they are good option if you are travelling over with a group of friends or partner and want to split the rent and utility bills.
Studios flats are self-contained flats with a cooking area and bathroom. The bedroom is often part of the living room or even just a sofa bed.
Bed-sits are a cheap option and enjoying a re insurgence in recent years. You will often find a bed-sit in a large Victorian or Edwardian property, which has been converted for the purpose. Generally a bedroom and a small living area you will be sharing the bathroom and kitchen with the other tenants in the house. Often the landlord will take care of the Council Tax, which makes it one of the least expensive options.
Houses can be rented, but you must bear in mind that as a non-domicile (provided you meet the requirements) that you will only be able to claim for the cost of the equivalent rent for a one bedroom flat.
