Professional registration

Depending on the nature of your industry and profession you may find that registration with the appropriate professional body is essential in order to work in the UK.

If you are a health care professional or teacher, registering in the UK with the appropriate professional body is mandatory.

Registering with professional bodies in industries such as Engineering and Construction give formal recognition and endorsement to your profession, but are in no way a mandatory requirement.

Mandatory registration

Health Jobs

For medical professionals including Radiographers, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors, Pharmacists, and other health care professionals wishing to practice their profession in the UK, registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC, formerly the CPSM) at www.hpc-uk.org is required. This process can take between 2 and 6 months, so it is very important that you get your application in well before you plan to work in the UK.

Teaching

Qualified teachers should register with The General Teaching Council of England (GTCE) at www.gtce.org.uk.

If you completed your teaching qualification in a country, which is a member of the European Union, you should be eligible for QTS (Qualified Teaching Status).

If you completed your qualification outside the European Union you should have your qualifications checked by NARIC at www.naric.org.uk.

You will also need to attain a UK police check through the Criminal records bureau (CRB). The majority of UK recruitment agencies or clients will assist you in this procedure upon employment.

For all advice and information about becoming a teacher in the UK visit the TDA website. The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) is the national agency and recognised sector body responsible for the training and development of the school workforce in the UK.
