Most independent freelancers require some degree of office equipment in the day to day running of their business, even if that is no more than an computer, fax machine, desk and phone in their office at home. They may overlook the need to insure this equipment, either in the mistaken belief that it will be covered by their own household policy or, more worryingly, because they just do not think about the risk of accident and theft from their home.
If you already have a good household insurance policy in place you must ensure that your business equipment is properly noted on the policy, including the interest that your company has in the equipment. If you do not have adequate cover for your equipment (including cover for laptops when in transit) then you should consider the need to cover the risk of loss or damage to your equipment under a separate insurance policy. As this policy will cover your business equipment, your company may pay the premium.
